Painting Alla Prima

Alla Prima is painting a subject matter in one sitting. It takes confidence but is fun to accomplish.

A medium coarse water colour paper was used for this exercise. 15x20 cm.

Your paper should be taped to a board; this produces a border of clear edge when the tape is removed. The paper was left dry for this exercise.

Suggested colours/material:
Blue, Golden Yellow, Cerulean Blue, Green, Red, Dark Blue, Mauve, Brown.
Blade, pencil, small rubber sponge, N0. 10 water colour brush.

Bayview Waters.

Sketch the subject with either a pencil or preferably a Blue Aquarelle pencil.

Load your brush with Blue colour and with one sweep flow it on for the sky; do not lift the brush until the completion of the wash. Wipe out the cloud areas with a sponge.

Wash the brush clean of the blue paint and dip into Golden Yellow and paint the glow under the clouds and behind the headlands.

Come down to the water area and wash this colour into the area just below the headland and towards the foreground.
Paint the headland in Blue and intermix some Green and Mauve into the tone, also paint some of this colour into the Yellow glow.

Now, with Cerulean Blue, paint the water. NOTE: Try to leave some of the Golden tone of the previous wash; this will appear as highlights on the ripples of the water.
Paint in the boats with Dark Blue, add a little Red into one or two. Continue this colour as reflection into the water. Also paint in the masts.

With confident strokes paint the wharf with Brown and allow merging with the water tone. NOTE: if your water wash is dry, just add water to your brush for the end of the wharf. Fine downward strokes are placed in for the peers.

When your painting is dry the highlights and water reflections can be scratched out using a sharp edge (blade).

Alla Prima paintings can often be left as they are or more detail can be added back in your studio, but do not amend detail you have painted, otherwise your Alla Prima effort will be defeated.

This technique is a great way to retain reference material for future paintings and or feel proud of your efforts and mount and frame the original Alla Prima art work.

So, pack some paints, a brush or two, paper, etc., and take off to a special spot where you can be blended with nature and ‘go with the flow’ as you paint Alla Prima.
