The Best Friend
Hamidah Gul,
B edtime is perhaps the most peaceful time for most human beings. It is a time when you can lie down, switch off your busy mind and rest easy knowing that when you wake up, things may just be better. You close your eyes to the ugliness of the world, and you revel in the silence that slumber brings as you tumble into serenity.
But do you know that while you lie there in your serene sleep, I am watching you. Crouching in the corner of your pitch black room as I watch your eyelids flutter in dreamscape, watching as you turn to your most comfortable position, a slight smile at the corner of your crimson lips.
If you knew, what will you do? Run? Where will you run to? I can walk a thousand steps to your measly one. I can yank your arms from your shoulders faster than you can realize they are gone. I can twist your neck so far back that you will see the world in a different way. Yes, what can you do if you know I am here?
Such innocence lies before me. Sins don't matter when you sleep. In your slumber, you are like an innocent little baby. Juicy steak to me. I think I can eat you. I can nibble your fingers and toes. I am sure the rest of you will taste just as good.
I watch you turn one more time, your back towards me. I am tempted to touch you. Then again my claws may dig too deep. Even my gentlest touch may severe an important vein. We don’t want that now, do we?
You moan in your sleep. Are you dreaming, love? Dreaming of someone or dreaming of something? I am a something. Do you want me to join you?
Not a question you want an answer to, I am sure.
You stir from your slumber.
Your eyes flutter open and I think the first thing you see is me. I move towards you. Strangely you smile at me. I am so close I can rip your heart out and have it for supper.
Ralphie, what are you doing in here?” She chuckles and reaches out to lovingly stroke the beautiful strawberry blond golden retriever sitting at the foot of her bed.
Nothing, just thinking of dinner.
